Wez Norris has been appointed the new chief executive officer of the Australian Fisheries Management Authority (AFMA).

Mr Norris, who has qualifications in natural resource management and over 20 years’ experience in fisheries management, regulation and development, was welcomed to the role by Minister for Agriculture David Littleproud and Assistant Minister for Agriculture Senator Richard Colbeck.
“Mr Norris brings unique expertise to the role, with strong understanding of Australia’s fisheries and the Australian fishing industry,” Minister Littleproud said. He stated that Mr Norris’ fisheries management experience included executive positions in the Pacific Islands Forum Fisheries Agency, AFMA and the Department of Agriculture and Water Resources.
Strong leadership needed
He added: “I am confident Mr Norris will provide the leadership needed to ensure the ongoing good management and sustainable use of Commonwealth fish resources, a strong compliance culture to deter illegal fishing in the Australian Fishing Zone and prioritising research funding towards activities that directly benefit the Australian fishery industry.
Assistant Minister Colbeck said the appointment would support AFMA’s ongoing work to ensure Australia continues to be a global leader in fisheries management.
“As a former AFMA employee Mr Norris has a working knowledge of the organisation and the critical role it plays in helping Australian fisheries improve profitability and returns,” Senator Colbeck said.
Former CEO Dr James Findlay resigned on 23 November 2018 to take-up the position of Australia’s director of National Parks. Anna Willock has been acting in the role since 24 November 2018.
