Vigo, Spain, will be hosting a technical conference on flow ice and its applications in the fishing sector on February, 5. The focus of the technical discussions will be on the advantages offered by this new product. They include: quick cooling capacity, wide surface contact, no damage to the product, preservation of quality and an easy distribution system.

The one-day seminar will base its programme on research work entitled "Optimisation of new preserving technologies based on flo-ice in order to increase its suitability for the processing and usable life of different marine species from a commercial perspective".

The research has been carried out through a collaboration between the Marine Research Institute (Higher Board of Scientific Investigations), the University of Santiago de Compestella, the University of Vigo and Kinarca Company.

The seminar will examine results obtained from studying the behaviour of fish-farmed turbot, horse mackerel, sardine and hake.

Of particular interest are results showing hygiene and health advantages and the prolongation of product life with energy and production savings. The indications are that the new preservation system should offer consumers food that has lost scarcely any of its inherent properties as it moves from catch to sale, from boat to consumer.

The congress is sponsored by Kinarca Ltd and the Vigo Financial Club and subsidised by the government of Galicia. (Details from www.kinarca.com)
