The Stolt Sea Farm farming sites and its processing plant have been awarded Friend of the Sea certification.
Stolt Sea Farm delivers 5,000 tonnes of turbot to its customers each year. Available in different sizes, this fish species is mainly destined to wholesalers and retail chains based in Europe - mainly in Spain, Italy, France, Scandinavia, Germany and Switzerland.
Turbot inland farming takes place close to the coast in tanks receiving water directly from outfalls. A system of pumps distributes the water, which is previously oxygenated, from a catchment pit into the tanks. The pipe that delivers water to the nursery and pre-fattening passes through filters and ultraviolet light to guarantee high water quality. Every 75 minutes the water is renewed in each tank. A computer system controls every step of the production.
During the assessment process the company provided all accurate documents attesting compliance of the farming site management system with FOS standards, and the sites are ISO 14001 certified.
There is no use of growth hormones or any other chemical compounds in the feed, and escapes are not possible.
“We know that Friend of the Sea certification represents an important added value for our production and we are proud to have achieved a positive evaluation against all audit requirements. We have received this certification for the third time and it is from 2006 that we are complying with their requirements”, said Luis Toro, director of Stolt Sea Farm.
