Pevaeche’s six purse seiners have successfully undergone a Friend of the Sea renewal audit.

The Spanish Pevaeche commercial group is composed of the six vessels which fish in the Atlantic area and are owned by Pevasa S.A Inpesca S.A. and Atuneros Vascos.

Yellowfin, skipjack and bigeye tuna caught by these vessels - which operate in the Eastern Central (FAO Area 34) and South East Atlantic Ocean (FAO Area 47) - are eligible to continue displaying the Friend of the Sea eco-label. Vessels of the same group which fish in the Indian Ocean have also achieved certification.

All vessels are registered with ICCAT (International Commission for the Conservation of Atlantic Tunas) and take part in the observer program initially requested by Friend of the Sea. The fleet is also recognised by the Earth Island Institute as Dolphin-Safe.

Pevaeche has a responsible fishing policy aimed at minimising the impact on immature fish and other associated species. Bycatch and discards account for less than 5% of the total catch. Sharks and turtles, if caught, are mostly returned back to the sea alive.

“Pevaeche places sustainability at the core of its business”, said Guillermo Arrien, commercial manager of Pevaeche.
