The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has warned of a voluntary recall on a frozen raw yellowfin tuna product called Nakaochi Scrape AA or AAA from Moon Marine USA Corporation (MMI).
MMI is recalling 58,828 lbs of the product in the US – which although has not been available to individual consumers, may have been used to make sushi, sashimi, ceviche and similar dishes available in restaurants and grocery stores.
Nakaochi Scrape is tuna backmeat, which is scraped off the bones and looks like a ground product.
The product has been linked to an outbreak of Salmonella Bareilly, which has caused 116 illnesses in 20 states. There has been 12 hospitalisations but no deaths linked to the outbreak so far.
The FDA state that many of the people who became ill reported eating tuna in sushi as “spicy tuna” and that if consumers are worried to ask the establishment if it contains the product.
People with compromised immune systems, infants and pregnant women are more likely to develop the illness and are warned not to eat raw or partially cooked fish.
“When in doubt, don’t eat it”, the FDA said.
