Marel and the Icelandic College of Fisheries have struck an agreement to continue the co-operation that has been in progress between them for the last three years, with an agreement signed on Marel’s stand at the IceFish exhibition, extending the agreement for a further two years.

According to Marel, the level of technology in fish processing is rising constantly as new equipment and production processes based around computer-managed technology appear – and this means that there is a growing demand for specialist staff in fish production with background understanding of technology and software.
Marel and the Icelandic College of Fisheries have for three years been running a specialised two-semester course in these subjects fro the past few years. Marel supplies the instructors and access to equipment, while the college handles training in the underpinning subjects and facilities, including assessment of potential candidates.
“The training materials are in constant development, as innovations in fish processing technology appear,” a Marel spokesperson said, explaining that Marel’s expectation is that its equipment functions as efficiently as possible to deliver maximum values.
“Marel technicians should be able to handle everything related to the equipment, including cleaning, diagnosing problems and minimising parameters that could adversely affects functionality. The training course is designed for students who have completed the Icelandic College of Fisheries two-year syllabus, as well as for those in the industry who are outside the college’s immediate area and who have passed its assessment.”
The aim is to run a one-year course at the college, with Marel technicians graduating at the end of it.
