Toyota Tsusho Corp has confirmed it will jointly start a co-operation with Kinki University to farm fully-cultured juveniles of bluefin tuna to up to 30cm in length from 6cm and supply them to fish farmers.
Japan-based Toyota Tsusho, the trading arm of Toyota Motor Corp, will raise juveniles provided by the university at a subsidiary in the city of Goto, Nagasaki Prefecture.
The company plans to ship the juveniles to domestic tuna farmers for the time being, it said. It can farm about 10,000 juveniles under the initial capacity.
Kinki University has decided on the cooperation to expand its tuna farming by using larger facilities of the company.
The university succeeded in fully culturing tuna juveniles in 2002. It shipped 40,000 tuna juveniles in 2009 but the figure accounted for less than 10% of 400,000 to 500,000 juveniles necessary for domestic tuna farming, it said.
