Síldarvinnslan’s freezer trawler Blængur has docked at Neskaupstaður to start landing its last trip of the year.
The catch for the trip came to a total of 900 tonnes, including a 520 tonne half-landing almost a month ago. The trip’s overall value is ISK 282 million, making it a record – in spite of having to cope with some challenging conditions.
“The second half of the trip was 19 days, of which we spent five days dodging in bad weather,” said Theodór Haraldsson, who replaced Bjarni Ólafur Hjálmarsson as skipper for the second leg of the trip.
“We spent 24 hours sheltering in a lee and two days in port in Hafnarfjörður. We were dodging weather the whole time. To start with, we were looking for saithe off the north coast and then on the Hali grounds. For the last two days we were on redfish, doing well on golden redfish and then fishing for deep redfish in the Skerja Deeps and the Grindavík Deeps, but without the same success.”
The year that is about to end has been the best one so far for Blængur in both tonnage and value terms. The overall catch this year has been 7100 tonnes with a value of ISK2100 million.
