Icelandic company Síldarvinnslan’s fresher trawlers Bergey and Vestmannaey have been fishing well so far this month, with both landing full capacity trips after only a few days at sea.

The two trawlers sailed on Friday a week ago, and both were back in port on Sunday with full fishrooms. Both were back at sea on Sunday night and are on their way to land in the Westmann Islands. So far in March Vestmannaey has landed 500 tonnes and Bergey 400 tonnes, with the focus on flatfish for the current trip.

They have been fishing well around the Westmann Islands recently, but an east wind has resulted in better conditions further west off Garðsskagi.

Vestmannaey and Bergey are operated by Síldarvinnslan subsidiary Bergur-Huginn, and operations manager Arnar Richardson said that the winter has been a difficult one for weather, which has finally improved, and the string of storms has affected their fishing activity.

Síldarvinnslan’s fresher trawler Gullver has also fished well on east coast grounds, landing 106 tonnes this week in Seyðisfjörður. Gullver’s catches are landed to the company’s own factory, as well as going to ÚA and Samherji processing plants on Akureyri and Dalvík, plus some of Gullver’s fish is shipped overseas with the Norræna ferry that sails to Denmark.
