Sri Lanka minister Rajitha Senaratne has revealed the country’s fisheries sector will be encouraged to upgrade in 2011 with measures introduced to increase both fish harvests and the prices of fish.

Existing fishing harbours will be modernised and four new ones will be constructed, while 400 fishing vessels with modern equipment enabling fishermen to fish in deep waters will be purchased this year.

Island-wide branches of a fishing corporation will also be established.
