Seafish is to host a one-day Seafood Training Academy conference and open day on 7 November which will focus on the variety of practical training programmes available from the Academy partners.

The open day, held at The Humber Seafood Institute in Grimsby, is now in its second year and is free to attend.

During the day there will be a mixture of training demonstrations from Academy partners along with short presentations from local employers and HM Prison Service on the benefits of training.

The event will illustrate the social benefits of training as well as the benefits to the bottom line. Most of the day will focus on six workshops, where delegates can see practical examples of training and be briefed on the latest food service trends in market data and training qualifications

The principles of frying fish and chips will be explained by award-winning fish fryer, Tracy Poskitt, from Fish & Chips at 149, in Bridlington, East Yorkshire, winner of the National Fish & Chip Awards 2011.

The remaining four practical demonstrations will focus on: Smoking fish using an AFOS mini kiln; Fishmongering Skills; Filleting and Hand processing skills; and Fish Quality Assessment.

Lee Cooper from Seafish, said: “Most employers now recognise that effective training can bring real benefits to the bottom line. With this, our second Academy Open Day, we are trying to raise the profile of those other important training benefits, the ones that not only benefit society as a whole, but also benefit the society within the business itself.”
