The successful Seafish Fleet Economics report is to be produced annually and staff from the Seafish Economics team are gearing up to meet vessel owners around the entire UK.
Reinforcements have been brought in for the next nine weeks to help interview skippers and owners from every region of the UK for the economic survey. The survey got off to a flying start at Fishing 2007 in Glasgow where skippers from around the UK completed the one page questionnaire and give permission for their vessel accounts to be included in the research.
Project manager John Anderson of Seafish Economics said, “we have had really positive feedback from skippers about the 2005 fleet report and how useful it is for comparing your vessel earnings, costs and profit to the average figures for your fleet segment”.
Mike Park, Scottish White Fish Producers Organisation, said, “we would urge skippers to support this survey because the industry are in the process of developing long term management policies which take account of socio economics, the information which Seafish provide by-way-of this report helps fill the knowledge gap. The UK fishing industry is smaller in size and professional in approach which makes me confident that most if not all of the owners will respond in a positive manner. ”
Barrie Deas of the NFFO urged participation and said, “it is quite clear that economic thinking is now playing a much bigger role in the CFP and this Seafish work is vital in demonstrating the economic realities of operating vessels of all sizes.”
