The New Brunswick Salmon Growers'' Association has changed its name and focus to better reflect the industry''s spread out of southwest New Brunswick.
The NBSGA, formed in 1987, said it is broadening its focus to include Nova Scotia, and is changing its name to the Atlantic Canada Fish Farmers Association (ACFFA).
NBSGA executive director Pamela Parker said many New Brunswick salmon farming companies have operations throughout Atlantic Canada - where they face common issues and challenges. By uniting under a single banner, the industry can better co-ordinate research, marketing, communications and management, she said.
For all intents and purposes, however, the ACFFA will only represent salmon farmers in New Brunswick and Nova Scotia. Newfoundland and Labrador farmers will remain separate from the new organisation, and Prince Edward Island does not contain any salmon farms.
New Brunswick may still be king when it comes to maritime salmon farming, but the renaming of the NBSGA reflects Nova Scotia's emergence within the industry.
For instance, New Brunswick-based Cooke Aquaculture is planning to spend $150 million (€108 million) over five years to expand its Nova Scotia operations.
While Nova Scotia's aquaculture industry may be blooming, it is still eclipsed by New Brunswick's sector.
Farmed salmon is New Brunswick's biggest agriculture-based export, generating over $270 million (€194.2 million) in annual revenue. In Nova Scotia that number is only $48 million (€34.5 million).
New Brunswick produces 30% of Canada's total farmed salmon, and is second in production behind only British Columbia. According to the ACFFA, the salmon industry supports 2,400 jobs in New Brunswick - of which 1,870 are located in Charlotte County.
Murray Hill, the former director of inland fisheries with the Nova Scotia Department of Fisheries and Aquaculture, will serve as the new Nova Scotia regional manager for the ACFFA.
The formal name change will take effect by the end of October. The ACFFA will be based in St George, NB.
