The global certifiers have joined together to identify common requirements for sourcing fishmeal and oil (FMFO) to improve sustainable global aquaculture practices.

The Aquaculture Stewardship Council (ASC), Global Aquaculture Alliance (GAA) and GlobalG.A.P say that collective standards for the the sourcing of FMFO need to be addressed urgently because fisheries that do not follow responsible management practices negatively impact the environment.

The view is that that regardless of which of the three certification programmes is followed, feed manufacturers should be required to provide traceability of a species back to its country of origin, and not use material sourced from endangered species or fish sourced from illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing.

Lastly, the organisations point out that feed manufacturers should make evidence of responsible sourcing publicly available.

This joint statement from the organisations follows on the back of the Memorandum of Understanding signed back in April 2013 to promote uptake of each of the respective sustainability certification programmes.
