Promens introduced its new Saeplast SuperSeal 400l tub at the European Seafood Exposition in Brussels earlier this year, and sales and marketing director, Hilmar Gudmundsson, tells World Fishing that the company has recently started to produce it for the market.

So far the tubs have been sold outside of Iceland and Mr Gudmundsson says that they should be a good addition to the industry within Iceland as well.

The tub was developed in collaboration with Icelandic food research company, Matís.

The main advantage of the tub is that one tub also acts as the lids of the tub below it – only one lid is required for the top tub. Mr Gudmundsson says that no other company has realised this concept.

This means that no dirt can fall from the forklift into the tubs and also means better insulation, which in turn means less ice consumption and less oxygen surrounding the catch. Also, drain water is unable to seep into the catch.

The tubs are 7kg lighter than the traditional tub – which means that less fuel is required. However, due to the design of the tub, the volume is greater.

The forklift holes are not at the bottom of the tub, they are at the side, which results in greater volume.

Promens will also be launching the new generation of the Saeplast 660l and 460l tubs at Icefish.

Mr Gudmundsson says that the tubs were known for their good stackability, but this has now been improved.

The feet of the previous containers were flat, but are now shaped to lock together more effectively – affectionately called “elephant feet”.

Production of the new generation tubs began in July.
