On the third and final day of the Offshore Mariculture Conference 2014 delegates visited the Piscicoltura del Golfo di Gaeta Soc. Coop. Agricola a R.L. (P2G) fish farm, which is situated about a mile off the coast, in the Gulf of Gaeta.
Two boats took the delegates out to sea, and a priest was present to bless the boats.
The farm's core business is the intensive farming of sea bass, sea bream and meagre, and delegates had the opportunity to see the 72 floating cages. The cages are split into two modules: the pre-fattening module which consists of 27 cages with a diameter of 16m, and the fattening module which consists of 10 cages with a diameter of 28m.
The 90,000 square metre area in the Gulf of Gaeta is characterised by high environmental standards such as pure and transparent water, as well as continuous Gulf Stream which ensures an adequate rate if waster turnover. The water is continuously monitored to rule out water, feed and fish contamination.
The operation's inland facilities consist of boat storage, a feed warehouse, quay for equipment and fish loading and unloading, packing room, refrigerated room for fish warehousing, ice machine room, and offices.
The farm has six vessels: a boat for pre-fattening feeding; a crane equipped catamaran for net change and plant maintenance; a crane equipped fishing boat, which is also used for control activities; a crane equipped boat for controls, net change and guard; and two polyethylene boats for feeding.
The farm produces 2,000 tonnes of the three farmed species, from fry purchased from qualified and certified hatcheries. Each batch of product produced at P2G can be fully traced and identified throughout the whole value chain through software which allows real time information on batch number, quantity, feed, farming days, temperature etc.
After the visit to the cages and a boat tour, P2G hosted a fantastic seafood lunch in Gaeta, with a speech from the Mayor of Gaeta welcoming delegates to the town.
