Wellington Mayor Celia Wade-Brown has congratulated the NZ Ministry of Fisheries, MAF and the developers of a new smartphone fishing app, which has won the Wireless Government Award.
Developed by Adam Hutchinson from Mogeo of Christchurch, the application notes the user’s location through GPS positioning and links them to a range of information including fishing rules for the area and local notices.
Mayor Wade-Brown attended the FutureGov Summit in Malaysia, held 12-14 October, which brings together public sector leaders and top officials from across the Asia-Pacific region for three days of intensive knowledge exchange.
The FutureGov Awards celebrate the Asia-Pacific region’s most successful government, education and healthcare organisations. They are an international benchmark by which public sector innovation is judged.
“Congratulations to the Ministry of Fisheries, MAF and the development team for this outstanding recognition at the FutureGov Awards,” says Mayor Wade-Brown.
“This is a smart solution that will help recreational fishers know the rules and also help protect fish stocks.
“Wellington’s public sector is innovative, creative and adapting to new opportunities. The award is a great acknowledgement on an international stage and enhances our reputation as a smart, creative Capital,” she said.
Fishers with smartphones can download the new application free of charge from Apple’s online app store or the Android market.
