Sarawak in Borneo, Malaysia, is poised to develop its deep sea fishing and aquaculture industries with the completion of the RM330 million integrated deep sea fishing port in Tanjung Manis in January.

The Tanjung Manis Integrated Deep Sea Fishing Port, on a 35-hectare site, is also the largest and most modern of its kind in the nation.

Fisheries Department director-general, Datuk Junaidi Che Ayob said the complex was a dream come true in its efforts to fully develop the industry in Sarawak and to attract more investors in the sector.

The complex, among others, has a pontoon, a 7,020m2 cold storage facility, a 420m long wharf and a 10,800m2 auction hall.

He said these facilities plus the rich resources in the area would make Tanjung Manis as the future hub of marine products processing industry in the state.

"When fully operational, we project the port to land about 150,000 tonnes of fish and other marine products per year," he said.

More facilities are expected to be brought in while the relevant government departments are expected to deploy their officers there.

Junaidi was at the port to receive the completion letter of the complex from Datin Norlainah Abdul Gani, who represented the director-general of the Public Works department.

The department had supervised the construction of the complex by a consortium of four companies namely, the Juara, Hock Seng Lee, Rheinhold and Mahla.

Agriculture and Agro-Based Industries Ministry Secretary-General Datuk Dr Zulkipli Idris and Hock Seng Lee's managing director Paul Yeo were among those present to witness the ceremony.
