The Shantou-Taiwan Chinese common squid FIP will focus on jigging and single trawl gears

The FIP is listed on the Fishery Progress website as the Shantou-Taiwan Chinese common squid FIP, focusing on jigging and single trawl gears. It will focus in part on improving harvest monitoring and training for fishermen and is being facilitated by the China Blue Sustainability Institute.

“This is one of the first FIPs launched in mainland China and has been endorsed by local fishery authorities and industry associations,” said Han Han, founder and executive director of the China Blue Sustainability Institute. “It is our hope that the Chinese common squid FIP will become a pilot for China’s fishery management reform that explores a co-management system across multiple species and gears. We are very excited to see the leading power of industry, academia and government convened under this FIP to support responsible and sustainable fishing practices.”

Blueprint

Sam Grimley from Sustainable Fisheries Partnership’s (SFP) buyer engagement team, said: “SFP is thrilled to see industry leaders collaborating on this FIP. We look forward to seeing the industry use this FIP as a blueprint for other squid fisheries, both in the region and globally.”

The FIP is funded by a variety of stakeholders including Beaver Street Fisheries, High Liner, Panapesca and Netuno USA. These companies, along with several other squid industry stakeholders worldwide, continue to work together through the Global Squid Supply Chain Roundtable to support the FIP and related projects and sustainability improvement work.
