A new organisation has been set up in Australia to connect the country’s aquaculture skills and hidden resources.

Aquaculture without Frontiers (Australia) Ltd, which is linked to the global Aquaculture without Frontiers charity, is structured as a charity to enable it to receive corporate sponsorships and donations by individuals interested in supporting its work.

This set up comes at a time when modern aquaculture is becoming booming, is one of the biggest contributors to sustainable food production for the world and is likely to underpin the future health of humans by providing the essential nutrients and vitamins currently missing from many diets.

AwF Australia’s first task is to create awareness of the organisation and to engage with like-minded initiatives and individuals to create projects and programmes that will help with improving the nutrition and health of disadvantages people and to foster social and economic development.

In addition, it will promote and support responsive and sustainable aquaculture to alleviate poverty and malnutrition and to enhance global food security.

From its first meeting last week, the Board recognised the need to improve indigenous and Pacific Islands aquaculture, boost the status of women in the industry and engage with schools and students in the region and will be working to roll out plans on these issues in the future.
