NASCO, responsible for conserving and managing Atlantic salmon stocks, has decided that a commercial fishing ban in the mixed-stock fishery off the coast of Greenland and the Faroes will remain in place until 2014.
The decision was made at last week’s 29th North Atlantic Salmon Conservation Organisation (NASCO) Annual Meeting and is based on scientific advice from ICES. This is the first time that NASCO has adopted multi-annual conservation measures.
Much of the discussions centred on the results of the performance review. To the satisfaction of the EU, NASCO got good grades. However, it was recommended to modernise the NASCO Convention, to better conserve and manage wild Atlantic salmon stocks, and to align the Convention to international law.
The 30th Annual Meeting of NASCO will take place in June 2013 in Ireland.
NASCO members are Canada, Denmark (for Greenland and Faroe Islands), EU, Norway, Russia and the United States.
