Mr Gregory, who is currently manager of the Florida Sea Grant Monroe County Extension Office in Key West, has been involved with fisheries for over 35 years. His focus has been on developing collaborative efforts with fishing organisations and regulatory agencies to enhance co-management practices.

He will take up the position on 20 May 2013, replacing Dr Stephen Bortone, who is retiring.

Doug Boyd, chairman of the Gulf Council, said: "The Gulf Council has many important issues on its agenda, and I look forward to working with Doug as our new executive director. His educational work with the fishing public will be a great asset, and his background and experience will go a long way to enhance the Council process.”

Mr Gregory added: "I'm eager to apply the skills and knowledge I've gained throughout my career to help lead the Gulf Council in providing the best fisheries management possible for the benefit of both the resource and the stakeholders.”

The Gulf of Mexico FMC prepares fishery management plans, which are designed to manage fishery resources within the 200 mile limit of the Gulf of Mexico.
