Ten lobster boats will use sonar to survey populations of the fish in coastal waters next summer and autumn, with the help of a grant from the Maine Technology Institute.
Scientists are getting help from Maine lobstermen to study herring populations in the state's coastal waters. The Maine Technology Institute announced yesterday that it has awarded a $532,000 (€382,718) grant to the Gulf of Maine Research Institute in Portland for herring research.
Herring catch limits have been cut because of scientific uncertainty and that's putting a financial squeeze on lobstermen because they use the fish for bait.
For the research project, 10 lobster boats will use sonar equipment to survey populations of the fish in coastal waters over next summer and fall.
