Liquid Robotics has announced support for the US State Department’s third annual Fishackathon.

This year’s event will bring together volunteer coders, technologists, and scientists around the globe to help create new applications and tools to thwart the global epidemic of illegal and unregulated fishing.

In support of the event, the company is providing historical and real-time ocean data collected by the Wave Glider, an unmanned surface vehicle.

The Wave Glider collects and communicates ocean data without the need for fuel. It performs long-duration missions that fundamentally change ocean research and monitoring, including patrolling vast marine sanctuaries for illegal fishing.

Over 800 million people make a living through fisheries, but with a global problem of overfishing there is demand for new approaches and technologies to save the world’s primary food sources and the overall health of the ocean.

Using unmanned, self-sustaining ocean robots to patrol the world’s oceans and communicate violations in real time is one of the innovations that will enable breakthroughs in the detection and capture of illegal fishing.

Fishackathon 2016 is taking place on Earth Day weekend which beings on 22 April 2016, where 43 host sites in 27 countries will participate to find a technological solution to their selected fisheries challenge.
