The deadline for nominations of the UK’s best fishermen closes on 25 March and the public are being urged to enter their submissions before it is too late.

It is open to all fishermen, processors and ports across the UK and Ireland, with the ceremony due to be held in Aberdeen on 26 May.

Simon Rimmer, who will host the awards, said: “In the UK we catch something like 60 different species of fish and are renowned worldwide for the wonderful quality and selection of seafood found in our waters.”

“That is because of the diversity of our fishing fleet. We have big boats, small boats, beach-launched vessels and ocean-going vessels all working in all weather,” added the Sunday Brunch co-presenter.

There are 12 categories at the awards, including; Young Fisherman of the Year, Shellfish Fisherman of the Year, and the Fisherman’s Lifetime Achievement Award.

With nominations free, Fishing News, which run the awards, are calling for fishermen to nominate either themselves, their friends or their loved ones.

David Linkie, editor of Fishing News, said: “Fishing is a way of life, often continuing through the generations, but the daily risks that our fishermen face should never be underestimated.”

“Knowing that they are providing the best quality fish and seafood is reward in itself, but we fell that they deserve further recognition,” he concluded.
