With growing concern in the UK about the lack of adherence to the regulations regarding crane operations on fish farm workboats, a Scottish company has developed a new safety device to ensure full legal compliance.
The KRANSKAN(tm) indicator from Hook Marine provides a visible and audible warning of dangerous conditions during lifting operations. The indicator has sparked widespread interest in the marine sector and new variants are being produced to meet different applications.
Hook Marine recognised the need for such a device, given that many marine cranes are not fitted with load indicators or inclinometers to warn of the approach of angles of heel at which the cargo might shift, with resulting loss of stability. Coloured lights and a two-tone alarm on the KRANSKANâ„¢ indicator warn the crane operator if either load or angle of heel is becoming dangerous.
Ken Smith of Hook Marine says: 'Appropriate safety equipment should be fitted to marine cranes and workboats, and cranes should be subject to a rigorous schedule of examination and testing in view of the important part they play in the daily life of a fish farmer. Above all, if operators are not certain, they should ask for advice.'
