Funding of over $360,000 for three projects in Nunavut, Canada, has been announced to strengthen the territory’s fishing industry.

The Canadian Northern Economic Development Agency (CanNor) is investing $220,000 to help conduct two studies that will explore the turbot fishery, which could benefit the communities of Grise Fiord and Qikiqtarjuak by creating new jobs. Funding of $85,000 will be put towards the renewal of Nunavut's Fisheries Strategy, and CanNor is also investing $58,000 to enhance a training simulator that will help individuals develop the skills they need to prepare for a career in the fishing sector.
"We are extremely pleased with the fact that the federal government, through CanNor, is supporting our efforts to help develop local fisheries for our communities. This is just the beginning of our efforts to help create fisheries economic development opportunities for communities in Nunavut", said Lootie Toomasie, chief executive officer of the Arctic Fishery Alliance.
