Fisheries Innovation Scotland has announced that applications are open for the next International Study Bursary 2018.
The bursary is for young people in the fishing industry to travel to another country to take up placements, working alongside those working in or with the commercial fishing industry including: catching, processing, supply chain, NGO, academia, indeed across the entire sector.
John Goodlad, chair of FIS, stated: "Fishing is changing so it is essential that we encourage, able, skilled and enthusiastic young people to take the Scottish Fishing Industry forward.
“Career development is crucial in this respect, and we know as an industry that we can learn from other nations. The opportunity to study how fisheries are managed and organised in other parts of the world will help the next generation develop their careers and benefit the wider fishing industry in Scotland.”
Individuals must have identified an international study or networking opportunity that could further their development or career. There is no set budget for the bursary as it will vary depending on location and travel costs, said FIS.
It is likely that applicants will come from the “younger” sector of the industry, but the primary focus of the bursary is on development of the individual.
Fisheries Innovation Scotland has funded previous bursaries, Michael Forbes and Simon Harvey visited British Columbia and Hannah Fennel spent time in Denmark, where they all worked alongside fishermen and others in the industry.
The closing date for applications is 31 October.
