Carlsen Net of Denmark and Garware-Wall Ropes of India have entered into an agreement for the transfer of technology for Garware to manufacture nylon pelagic nettings in India. Knud Carlsen told WF that Garware staff have already started coming to Denmark.

He said he is very pleased at the high level of skills and the range of production expertise which Garware has in India. The much lower Indian production cost, combined with these skills make such a venture more attractive than say with the low-cost Baltic and East European countries, he said.

Their labour costs will gradually rise in the future, Carlsen added.

The agreement means that Garware will be able to expand into production of much larger nets using nylon, Carlsen said. Garware says it is already producing in nylon for tuna purse seining and cages. Carlsen said they would be continuing with their own high-end products which sell throughout the northern European markets and will remain their primary focus. Production in India of nylon nets for Carlsen is due to start after the Danish summer holidays.

A statement from Garware said both companies would work together to service the market in Denmark. Carlsen said the Indians would be selling to their own markets and might also set up a handling depot in Rotterdam.

The key benefits of these nettings, they say, are high shock absorption capacity, excellent mesh stability and high abrasion resistance delivered through the special impregnation recipe and technology used by Carlsen products.

New rope

Garware-Wall has also just completed a new nylon rope covered with polyethylene braided for pelagic trawling. Atli Mar Josafatsson, European operation manager, says that the braided cover protecting the nylon makes the rope lasts longer.

Garware says it continues to have international success with its Sapphire netting and its Olivene brand braided nets are proving very popular. These brands of netting are vey frequently used throughout America, Europe, South Africa, and New Zealand.
