The Australian government has committed $3.5 million to help Huon Aquaculture expand its Parramatta Creek factory and boost employment in the region.

Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister for Agriculture, Senator Richard Colbeck, joined Huon Aquaculture owners Peter and Frances Bender and Acting Premier Jeremy Rockliff last week to officially launch the construction process.

“Tasmania’s aquaculture industry is the envy of the country and the construction of this value-added processing facility will help it remain at the leading edge,” Senator Colbeck said.

“It is fantastic to see private industry investing in its future, along with contributions from the State and Federal Governments.”

Senator Colbeck said the project would boost employment in the region by creating 90 ongoing jobs and a further estimated 100 jobs during construction.

The $12 million value-added processing facility will include a large smokehouse and state-of-the-art processing and packaging machinery.
