Visgilde, a Dutch fishmonger franchise with 46 shops, has launched a campaign to introduce the MSC’s blue eco-label to its customers, according to a statement from the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC).

Banners, posters, barker cards and leaflets in Visgilde shops all over the Netherlands will explain to customers what the MSC label stands for - fish and seafood from well managed and sustainable fisheries. The shops have received certification for processing and selling fish and seafood from 13 fisheries that are certified to the MSC environmental standard and are thus eligible to mark their catch with the MSC's blue logo [3]. Initially, Visgilde shops will offer pollock and salmon from Alaska, New Zealand hoki and North Sea herring from MSC-certified fisheries. More species will follow when in season.

Visgilde is the biggest group of associated fish and seafood retailers in the Netherlands. Their campaign will greatly increase consumers' choice of sustainably caught fish and seafood. Visgilde's Marketing Manager Ingeborg Oosterhuis says: “Sustainability has become increasingly important in the fish business and the members of Visgilde consider it a necessity. We cannot lose sight of the future and by offering MSC-labelled fish and seafood we help to make sure that coming generations can still enjoy this highly nutritious food option.”

MSC's Chief Executive Rupert Howes adds: “We are delighted to welcome Visgilde into the MSC programme. A great number of fisheries, producers and retailers have put sustainability at the heart of business and it is wonderful that the MSC is being recognised as the credible vehicle to take that commitment to the consumer. Visgilde's initiative is particularly exciting as it is the first group of independent and specialised fishmongers joining the MSC. It is an impressive demonstration of the MSC programme's flexibility. Our programme has been designed to cater for everyone's needs and requirements - big guys and smaller guys.”

Camiel Derichs, MSC's North European Fisheries Manager, comments: “Visgilde shops can be found all over the Netherlands and they reach many consumers. Their enthusiasm in raising awareness for sustainable fishing and introducing our eco-label is enormous and we are looking forward to working with this ambitious group. The Visgilde move complements the recent announcement of the Dutch retail chains to switch to sustainable fish and seafood only and it is commendable that the country is truly determined to turn those plans into actions.”
