UK food retailer, Waitrose, is renewing its commitment to sustainable fishing by helping to ensure that the world’s fish stocks are properly protected for future generations.

Quentin Clark, head of sustainability and ethical sourcing for Waitrose, said: “With so many species under pressure, or on the brink of extinction, the issues we face as retailers, producers and suppliers has never been more urgent.”
He added: “Our view is that that issue of sustainability is not just crucial to any environmental debate; it is also central to any commercial debate.”
One of the ways that Waitrose is showing its commitment towards the cause is by sponsoring the World Council of Fisheries Society’s 6th World Fisheries Congress (WFC), being held in Edinburgh, Scotland, from 7-11 May.
The retailer will be providing delegates with a bag for life and a reusable jute bag to promote sustainability. There has been much concern over the last few years on the negative impact that single use plastic bags have on the marine environment.
The theme of the WFC this year will be ‘Sustainable fisheries in a changing world’ and will examine the science that underpins sustainable fishing, adaptive management and the tools to cope with changing environments.
