Vopnafjordur factory deploys new enclosed discharging system for the first time.
HB Grandi’s vessels this week fulfilled their blue whiting quotas for the year and discharged the last of their catch.
The Icelandic fishing company‘s vessel Lundey NS docked at Vopnafjordur on Wednesday 5 May with 1,300 tonnes following up on the 1,400 tonnes discharged by Faxi RE two days earlier.
The first fishmeal produced by HB Grandi‘s rebuilt Vopnafjordur factory was shipped out this week using a new enclosed discharging system for the first time.
Sveinbjorn Sigmundsson, factory manager said that freighter Wilson Grip arrived on Tuesday 4 May from Grundartangi to load fishmeal.
"There were no problems loading the fishmeal onto the freighter and this is a big improvement on the old system. Before, we needed 16 staff to do this, but now only two are needed," said Sigmundsson. "Of course there have been a few teething troubles, but these have all been dealt with as they appeared. We don’t yet have any feedback from buyers, but all the samples we have had analysed show that we are producing top quality meal.
"Our raw material has been fresh, good quality fish, and that’s the primary requirement for manufacturing products to meet the highest standards," Sigmundsson said.
HB Grandi’s pelagic vessels will remain in port until 20 May, when the Atlanto-Scandian herring fishery is expected to begin.
