MEPs approved a fisheries partnership agreement with Cape Verde by a large majority today (374 to 67). The agreement only concerns tuna fishing, giving fishing rights to French, Portuguese and Spanish vessels.

The report by Duerte Freitas (EPP-ED, PT) on the Fisheries Partnership Agreement with Cape Verde approves the Commission's proposal.

The agreement is for the next five years, and constitutes a reduction of fishing rights.

The new protocol allows only tuna fishing, and the number of licenses has been cut from 117 to 84 vessels (25 freezer tuna seiners--12 Spain, 13 France--11 pole-and-line tuna vessels--7 Spain, 4 France--and 48 surface longliners--41 Spain, 7 Portugal).

The annual financial contribution of the Community is 385,000 euros.
