Dubai’s Ministry of Environment and Water has adopted a modern system to measure the length of fish as part of an initiative to develop fishery inspection procedures in the city’s local markets.

The External Audit Section will use the new system to carry out a new phase of inspections to help prevent fishing, selling and marketing of fingerlings and reinforce regional capacities in applying regulations for the inspection of fishing enterprises.

With this, Dubai aims to protect and ensure the development of living aquatic resources as well as enhance food security in the United Arab Emirates.

H.E. Engineer Saif Mohammed Al-Shara, assistant undersecretary for the External Audit sector says the easy-to-use system is compact and designed to provide calculations based on area, size, length and height.

The new measuring device will also be used to measure fishing gargoors (traditional cage fish traps) in terms of height and length, in addition to measuring the openings of fishing nets.

The Ministry will also look at the implementation of federal legislation on water resources in co-operation with local authorities.

The adoption of this measuring technology is in line with the national initiative to adopt smart services as part of the directives of H.H. Sheikh Khalifa Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, president of UAE, who declared 2015 as the year of innovation and asserted the Ministry’s eagerness to support federal and local government's efforts to achieve the goals of UAE Vision 2021.
