MAN B&W Diesel Service Center Denmark says it has completed the refurb of engines on the factory-freezer trawler ship ‘Lazurnyy’, one of four large fishing vessels owned and operated by Westrybflot in Kaliningrad, Russia.

Built in 1998, Lazurnyy is powered by two 3,500 BHP, six cyl. Pielstick PC 2-5 main engines built under licence by Russki Diesel. Each engine drives a 1500 KVA shaft alternator via a Valmet main gearbox. The shaft alternators have been completely overhauled and new main bearings fitted.

The main engines’ overhaul included: cylinder heads, pistons, connecting rods, cylinder liners, fuel injection pumps, fuel injection nozzles, turbochargers, main bearings and thrust bearings.

MAN B&W Diesel said that the docking of the 103-metre factory trawler was handled by the neighbouring Orskov Yard. Frederikshavn was selected because Westrybflot wanted to improve and optimise the major engine overhaul processes in connection with their dockings - both with regard to quality and time needed.

“We cooperated with Orskov Yard on the docking and offered a tailored, engine overhaul package,” says Steen Hviid Mortensen, senior manager of Service

Center Denmark

During docking, ‘Lazurnyy’ had a crew of 40. It has a crew of 72 when operating at sea. The ship is now due to head from Kaliningrad for South African fishing grounds.

“The customer was recommended to Frederikshavn as the ideal one-stop place for docking and engine overhaul, due to excellent cooperation within our group - all the way from SEMT Pielstick in France to MAN B&W Diesel in St. Petersburg”, concludes Steen Hviid Mortensen.

Westrybflot JSC is one of the biggest fishing companies in the city of Kaliningrad. Established in 1992, it also handle sales of frozen fish products. In 1993, Westrybflot was reorganised into a closed joint-stock company. Westrybflot employs about 400 seamen and has a management and technical staff complement of 24.

MAN B&W Diesel says it is one of the world’s leading designer of large-bore diesel engines. The company designs two- and four-stroke diesel engines, generating sets, turbochargers and CP propellers, which are manufactured by MAN B&W Diesel and its licensees. Engine outputs range from 450 to 97,300 kW. MAN B&W Diesel has approximately 6,700 employees in Germany, Denmark, UK, France, the Czech Republic and China. The company’s worldwide service network consists of authorised repair shops and service centres. MAN B&W Diesel is a subsidiary of the German industrial group MAN AG.
