The National Fisheries Institute’s Crab Council has been given a grant by Sea Pact, an alliance of seafood distributors that is donating to four organisations working in seafood sustainability to further special initiatives.
The Crab Council was recognised for funding innovative and science-based sustainability projects throughout Southeast Asia’s Blue Swimming Crab fishery.
The Crab Council will use Sea Pact’s grant for equipment and training as part of an effort to assess crab enhancement projects in the Philippines’ Blue Swimming Crab fishery, most specifically through the tagging and tracking of hatchery raised crabs.
“We are very grateful for Sea Pact’s support,” said Brendan Sweeny of Handy International, the Crab Council’s interim Chairman. “Crab Council initiatives have experienced great success in the Philippines. Sea Pact’s funding will help develop a program to allow our in-country partners to monitor crabs after they are released, providing valuable life-history information to inform and refine hatchery practices.”
