The European Fisheries Control Agency (EFCA) has adopted its work programme for 2014-2018, along with is budget for next year.

The budget of €9,217,150 is almost the same figure as 2013’s budget.

For the 2014-2018 period, the European Fisheries Control Agency will be dedicated to supporting the Member States and the Commission in the implementation of the new features of the Common Fisheries Policy, in accordance with its core tasks.

One of these core tasks will be the Joint Deployment Plans in force in the North Sea, Baltic Sea, Mediterranean Sea, North Atlantic and Western waters.

Another will be supporting Member States and the European Commission in areas such as IT projects for data monitoring and networks, training, and horizontal support activities.

The EFCA’s mission is to promote the highest common standards for control, inspection and surveillance under the Common Fisheries Policy – which will bring new rules which must be implemented, such as landing obligations, regionalisation, and the core control and enforcement policy.

However, the EFCA is also being affected by financial cuts and budget constraints.

“In the current situation, we are committed to do more with less”, said Pascal Savouret, EFCA executive director.
