Canadian company Netukulimk Fisheries Limited is to receive $15,342 to complete energy and efficiency audits of its vessels.

The Connaigre Peninsula based company manages fishing activities by the Miawpukek Band, and will receive the grant through Newfoundland and Labrador’s Fisheries Technology and New Opportunities Program.

“Energy efficiency research has been a focus of the Fisheries Technology and New Opportunities Program, as energy efficiency generates cost savings for operators, and can also promote environmental conservation. With this project, the Provincial Government’s investment of more than $15,000 has the potential to help Netukulimk Fisheries Limited reduce its fuel costs, and also reduce the carbon footprint of its operations”, said Keith Hutchings, Newfoundland and Labrador’s Minister of Fisheries and Aquaculture.

Audits of the vessels will be completed by TriNav, a firm that has carried out 50 audits of vessels in the Atlantic provinces and the United States.

The information collected will be compiled into a comprehensive report for each vessel that provides recommendations on how to improve overall operational efficiency and energy use.

“Fuel is a significant cost driver for fish harvesters, and so achieving greater energy efficiency when using our vessels has the potential to create benefits for everyone who has a stake in our fishing activity” said Shayne McDonald, executive director of Netukulimk Fisheries Ltd.
