The Honourable Peter MacKay, Minister of Foreign Affairs, Minister of the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency and Member of Parliament for Central Nova, on behalf of the Honourable Loyola Hearn, Minister of Fisheries and Oceans, yesterday announced that Canada’s New Government will invest $6 million in four Nova Scotia fishing harbours.
"This funding represents a considerable federal investment in Nova Scotia," said Minister MacKay. "Canada's New Government knows that fishers must have safe and efficient harbour facilities to support their important contribution to their community and province."
Major harbour improvement projects are actively underway at Pictou Island, Baileys Brook and Toney River, while dredging nears completion at East Chezzetcook. The work will help ensure these important harbours will be in good operating condition for their communities for years to come.
This $6 million investment, combined with projects recently announced by Canada's New Government, brings the investment for Small Craft Harbours in Nova Scotia this year to $23.8 million.
These projects will be implemented by Fisheries and Oceans Canada as part of its Small Craft Harbours Program in cooperation with the harbour authorities that manage and operate the facilities for local users. This close cooperation with clients allows the federal government to continue to provide an operable system of harbours and facilities throughout Canada in support of commercial fishers.
