Dominic LeBlanc, Canadian Minister of Fisheries, Oceans and the Canadian Coast Guard, has announced that the Government of Canada is investing $68.2 million this year in small craft harbour improvement projects across Newfoundland and Labrador.

Judy M. Foote, Minister of Public Services and Procurement, said that $26.9 million of the $68.2 million will be invested at 16 harbours throughout eastern Newfoundland and the Bay de Verde Peninsula. Five of these harbours will see their investment extend into future years for an additional $14.6 million.

This includes funding for multi-year projects at Bay de Verde to reconstruct the fish plant wharf and the north side breakwater, which was destroyed by fire in April.
The fire had considerable impact on the community and this announcement is meaningful for the rebuilding of a prosperous and sustainable fishery for the people of Bay de Verde.

Additional projects at this harbour include repairs to the north side service and storage area as well as the completion of the south side breakwater reconstruction project that began last year. This work will provide a safe working environment for harbour users over the long term.

“Infrastructure investment is a priority for our Government,” said Mr LeBlanc. “It is good for all Canadians and good for the Canadian economy. Today’s announcement of small craft harbour investments in Newfoundland and Labrador is just one more example of the federal government’s commitment to promote the fishing industry - a key economic sector for a number of regions. We are proud of this investment, which will foster employment opportunities that benefit local workers and support coastal communities across the country for years to come.”
