Belfast’s Ewing''s Seafoods has bagged a new contract for smoked salmon with Selfridges – its first with a retailer outside of Northern Ireland.

The salmon is sourced from the Glenarm Organic Salmon Company in County Altrim. And according to Crawford Ewing, director, Ewing’s Seafoods, it's the “best organic salmon in the world.”

He said that the contract with Selfridges should open up other doors with the retailer in terms of supplying them with other lines, but that more research into the market needs to be done before that happens.

The contract should help the company gain kudos though both in Britain and in the overseas market – and exports are certainly one area that the company is looking to better exploit in the future.

Mr Ewing told World Fishing & Aquaculture: “We’re looking at export markets in Dubai, The Netherlands and Hong Kong. We’ve already had success in Dubai, there is a huge market for local Irish Glenarm Organic Salmon at top end hotels – there is a lot of money to spend on luxury food items out there.”

The family business was established in 1911, the company cures fresh salmon using its own kiln at its processing plant in the Shankill Road area.
