The Port Elizabeth-based fishing vessel Kingfisher, with 19 crew members on board, sunk on Monday 22 December 2008.

The vessel went down in stormy weather in Gibson Bay, near Oyster Bay off Cape St Francis. The Kingfisher had left harbour four days earlier to fish for squid.

Sadly, only five of the crew survived, including the skipper, with six men confirmed dead and eight presumed drowned.

According to reports, police are investigating only a standard inquest case and charges of culpable homicide were not brought against skipper Dougie Campbell.

However, Police spokesman Marianette Olivier said a case of culpable homicide could always be opened if deemed necessary by the investigating officer.

Police do the not suspect foul play and statements from all five survivors and the SA Maritime Safety Authority (Samsa) will ultimately determine the type of investigation conducted.
