Axis 4: A tool in the hands of fisheries communities enables local communities decide how best to use the EFF money for the sustainable development of their local area.

The Farnet (Fisheries Areas Network) guide #7 provides previous examples from across Europe:

  • By bringing fisheries communities together and strengthening their influence by building links and trust
  • By increasing income and safeguarding existing jobs through new sources of revenue and improving the competitiveness of products
  • By creating new job opportunities for local people

The Axis 4 initiative is implemented by private public partnerships called Fisheries Local Action Groups (FLAGs), made up of representatives from fisheries and aquaculture.

Around £7.3m has been made available through the Axis 4 scheme – £3.9m of this from the EFF and £3.4m through the Marine Management Organisation and the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs.

More than 300 FLAGs have already generated several thousand projects adapted to local needs.
