Aramark has announced that it has achieved MSC Chain of Custody certification, this allows it to source and serve wild-caught seafood that is sustainable and traceable to a certified fishery.

The MSC programme is being rolled out across 15 of its largest university and college accounts across Canada, this aims to offer certified sustainable seafood options to tens of thousands of staff, students and visitors.
“We are proud to be partnering with the Marine Stewardship Council to identify MSC certified species on our menus through the use of the blue ecolabel,” said Scott Barnhart, senior vice president, Global Supply Chain and Procurement at Aramark.
He added: “We continue to grow the number of MSC certified species on our menus as part of our commitment to responsible sourcing and we’re focusing on practices that help us educate and engage our consumers around this global issue.”
Throughout 2016, Aramark aims to serve approximately 30,000 pounds of certified seafood in Canada.
This stems from the success at Dalhousie University, the first Aramark account to achieve MSC certification in 2014.
It aims to further solidifies the Aramark commitment to support sustainable fisheries and solutions that promote healthier oceans for generations to come.
MSC Chain of Custody ensures that from ocean to plate, MSC labelled seafood is purchased from a certified supplier, properly segregated and labelled so it is never substituted with non-certified species, and is traceable back to a certified source.
The partnership so far includes; Carleton University, Concordia University, Dalhousie University, Durham College/University of Ontario Institute of Technology and Glendon College, MacEwan University, Memorial University, Saint Mary’s University and Seneca College.
As well as the University of Alberta, University of BC Okanagan, University of Calgary, University of Lethbridge, University of Manitoba, Wilfrid Laurier University and York University.
Jay Lugar, Program Director for MSC in Canada, said: “Their work to achieve MSC certification and enthusiasm for communicating their engagement will undoubtedly provide considerable added value as their customers look to them to provide sustainable dining options that meet the highest global standards.”
The MSC Chain of Custody certification obtained by Aramark also enables the company to extend participation in the program to other customers interested in serving MSC certified seafood.
