APM Terminals has signed an agreement with the Callao regional Government, the Peruvian Navy and the Artesian Fishing Community to help achieve sustainable fishing and safe practices within the local industry.
APMT will provide around US$3m to help with the development of the Port of Callao. The modernisation of the commercial fishing terminal will concentrate on the accommodation of local fishing fleets due to concerns about possible displacement with the ongoing construction of an expanded cargo facility at the port.
Henrik Kristensen, managing director, APM Terminals Callao, said: “Our business model is based on the ‘triple bottom line’ approach, including performance measures for safety, environmental sustainability and positive socio-economic impact, aligned with the UN Global Compact principles.”
The agreement which was signed on 20 August 2012 will improve anchorage for the Callao fishing fleet – approximately 400 vessels – and will improve the fishing dock with the installation of new lifting equipment, weighing scales, freshwater tanks, sewage pumps and sanity amenities. The investment will also allow the fleet to be located outside the breakwaters with new anchoring buoys and pontoons. This will reduce the number of vessels inside the port and improve overall safety.
Also part of the agreement, the Peruvian Navy is to provide an anchorage area for some fishing vessels and will help to increase security patrols inside the port limits.
