Willum Anderson, chief engineer on the “Huginn VE-55”, a 68m Icelandic fishing vessel which used to be out of range 95% of the time, says that SEVSAT gives them internet and telephone access on fishing grounds far away from shore.
SEVSAT is a maritime VSAT solution from Ship Equip. A key component of the SEVSAT solution is the stabilised antenna, of which Ship Equip has delivered more than 1,000 on a worldwide basis.
The trawler “Huginn VE-55” is based in Vestmanna Island in Iceland, and has installed SEVSAT 128Kb up/128Kb down and two telephone lines.
Willum Anderson spent two years checking the different providers of seaborne communication before he decided on SEVSAT from Ship Equip.
“New technology together with quality components and a guaranteed bandwidth were the main reasons we selected Ship Equip,” says Willum.
“Before we had no real communication outside of 30-40Nm, except for the very expensive satellite telephone which we used very little. Now we have cheap telephone lines and internet for everyone which lets us exchange e-mail, read news, check and order spare parts, get weather forecasts and much more any time of the day and, for instance, with no limitation on talking on the phone.”
“Our experience with Ship Equip as a supplier is very good. When we had a tuning problem it was quickly dealt with and the fault was fixed,” he explains.
Huginn ehf. owns the trawler “Huginn VE-55” which fishes pelagic species such as herring and capelin and processes the fish onboard for the export market, mainly Russia.
