Scientists and researchers have been working together, using WESMAR sonar, to determine whether fish stocks have been replenished after a three year closure of fishing in Lake Kinneret, also called the Sea of Galilee, Israel’s largest lake.
Recently legendary fisherman Menachem Lev reported that his WESMAR sonar has found “very optimistic signs, including an abundance of sardines and tilapia, in the Lake.” His reports have given new hope to the many fishermen who supply fish to the communities surrounding the Lake, most notably, St. Peter’s fish (tilapia), which is consumed by the millions of Christians each year who visit the Sea of Galilee to celebrate its religious history. Tilapia has become very much a part of the local economies, according to WESMAR’s dealer in the area.
Captain Lev explained that with his WESMAR sonar he can identify fish according to type and size, and perhaps most importantly he can identify dispersed fish at a great distance and close to the bottom.
