McMurdo’s new Smartfind S5 AIS SART (Automatic Identification System Search and Rescue Transmitter) has been authorised for installation onboard Danish-flagged vessels and in accordance with the requirements of the Danish Maritime Authority.

“This approval means that Danish flagged vessels can now take advantage of the upgraded specification of the S5 AIS SART, as an alternative search and rescue locating device to existing 9GHz Radar SARTs,” explained McMurdo CEO Jeremy Harrison.
The alternative AIS SART was introduced into IMO GMDSS carriage requirements on 1 January. According to McMurdo, a major benefit of the AIS SART is that target survivor information becomes viewable using standard ship AIS equipment – both the range and course to locate the survivors will be clearly presented on the ship’s AIS user display.
Smartfind S5 transmits a series of updating structured alert messages including its geographic position and serialised identity number.
Once activated, it transmits emergency alerts for a minimum of 96 hours. An in-built high-precision GPS provides highly accurate position information to assist in the quick recovery of survivors.
After activation, it may be suspended inside the life raft or mounted in an elevated position, using the integrated extension pole.
Complete with highly visible carry case and extension pole, it is priced at £425 (€507/$664) excluding tax.
