The third Scottish Inshore Fisheries Conference will provide active fishermen with an informal opportunity to meet fellow fishermen and others from around Scotland with an interest in inshore fishing.

The free to attend event opens with an evening reception in Inverness on Thursday 8 October (which is also free), followed by the main conference on Friday 9 October 2015.

This year’s conference will continue the celebration of the Year of Food and Drink Scotland 2015 and there will be opportunities to share experiences and knowledge in an informal setting on a wide range of issues, including long-standing fisheries management challenges and actions, and proposals to improve the evidence base on which fisheries management decisions are made.

Richard Lochhead MSP, Cabinet Secretary for Rural Affairs, Food and the Environment, will launch the conference and delegates will also have the opportunity to attend workshops/sessions on a variety of subjects as well as visit stands and speak to representatives from a range of organisations including, the Marine Alliance for Science and Technology for Scotland (MASTS), fishing federations, Seafish, Marine Scotland, Scottish Natural Heritage, and others.

“I’m looking forward to launching the inshore fisheries conference on 9 October in Inverness,” said Mr Lochhead. “Inshore fishing is vitally important to the Scottish economy and supports many remote communities. Our inshore fishermen provide some of the best seafood in the world and in Scotland’s year of food and drink our high quality seafood is continuing to enhance its global reputation for quality and provenance with excellent prospects for continued growth.”

Delegates will be given the opportunity to attend workshops to discuss their points of view on the topics of:

  • Opportunities to develop local markets
  • Working with Fishermen to improve inshore fisheries science
  • Community Supported Fisheries
  • Inshore Fisheries - Processors Viewpoint
